Governments meeting in Paris have pledged support for saving plants, the basis of all life on earth. The World Conservation Union has been a driving force in the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC). This week, at a meeting of the scientific advisory body to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) governments have recognized the GSPC as a benchmark model to follow for effective biodiversity conservation in the future.
The Global Strategy for Plant Conservation is a target-based approach, consisting of 16 outcome-oriented goals for plant conservation that embrace conservation, sustainable use and capacity building for plant diversity. It has been heralded as a success, resulting in tangible progress to save plants globally.
Contributions to the strategy from the World Conservation Union have involved the successful development of an International Standard for Sustainable Collection of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants by the union’s SSC Medicinal Plant Specialist Group, working with TRAFFIC. In addition to this, the union’s SSC Invasive Species Specialist Group has developed an invasive species database and an experience-based model and tool that will highlight future threats to plants.
